March 21 – The Women’s Super League is promoting its Women’s Football Weekend (March 23-24) through a series of visual takeovers of famous English landmarks.
Through immersive augmented reality CGI, the visuals will spotlight the four derby matches in this week’s fixtures: Manchester City vs Manchester United, Everton vs Liverpool, West Ham vs Chelsea and Sunderland vs Durham.
The aim is to highlight football culture and rivalries through a series of VFX stunts. The content will display half-and-half scarves and banners as well as team flags and lockers in prime locations of Regent Street, Radio City Tower, Deansgate Square and Roker Pier Lighthouse.
Nikki Doucet – CEO of the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship, said: “Women’s Football Weekend is one of the biggest weekends of the year for our sport and is a great opportunity to showcase the talented teams and players we have in our leagues.
“The weekend is a window into the elite level of women’s football, and we hope it draws more people in to engage with the sport going forward.”
In recent seasons the Women’s Football Weekend promotion has resulted in record attendances. This season the bulk of the matches will take place in clubs’ main stadia.
This season clubs have broken attendance records across both the Women’s Super League and its second tier Championship. With the men’s club game breaking for international fixtures, the WSL said it expects with the promotion that more records will be broken.
