March 27 – FIFA have threatened the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) with suspension after a local court postponed the federation’s annual general meeting.

In a letter signed by FIFA’s chief of member associations Jean-Marie Kenny, the world federation demands that the FKF stage their AGM soon so that elections can be organised later this year, expressing “great concern” about the situation.

FIFA refers to article 69 of the FKF statutes and article 58 of the FIFA statutes which stipulate that recourse to ordinary courts is prohibited unless foreseen by FIFA.

Referring to the order of the Mombasa High Court to postpone the AGM,  FIFA said that third-party interference is a violation of article 19 of the FIFA Statutes. “We further wish to underline that a violation of this obligation by the FKF or its members may lead to sanctions as provided for in the FIFA Statutes, including a possible suspension.” The letter stresses that a suspended FIFA association loses its membership rights.

As recently as 2022, FIFA banned the FKF for nine months citing “third-party interference”. The global governing body demanded the government return the administration of the game to FKF. Authorities had arrested FKF president Nick Mwenda on charges of embezzling public funds. A controversial figure, Mwenda remains FKF chairman, currently serving his last term.

In 2027, Kenya are due to host the Africa Cup of Nations, alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
