Eto’o says Cameroon sports ministry’s appointment of Brys is an illegal act

April 5 – The Cameroonian FA, Fecafoot, and its president Samuel Eto’o have rejected the appointment of national team manager Marc Brys by the sports ministry, claiming it breaks the law.

Earlier this week, Cameroon’s sports ministry picked the Belgian as the new manager of the Indomitable Lions, but Fecafoot had no hand in or knowledge of the appointment, and in a letter have called the appointment an ‘illegal’ act.

“The national federation cannot recognise these appointments made outside any legal and regulatory framework,” said Eto’o (pictured) in a letter, which went on to express Fecafoot’s regret that it had not been involved “closely, nor remotely” in the selection process.

The letter argued that the appointment contravenes a presidential decree relating to the organisation of Cameroon’s national football teams, which details that Fecafoot is responsible for their management.

Fecafoot had previously written of its “great astonishment” in the clash with the sports ministry.  Eto’o himself is under investigation by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for alleged improper conduct.

Brys is to succeed Rigobert Song, who failed to impress at the Africa Cup of Nations. Cameroon crashed out in the last 16, signalling the end of Song’s reign.

The Belgian has previously coached among others Beerschot, FC Den Bosch and Al Faisaly. Under Belgian manager Hugo Broos, Cameroon won the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
