Ipswich secure second EPL promotion slot leaving big names to battle in the play-offs

May 7 – Ipswich Town, with back-to-back promotions, have secured promotion to the Premier League after finishing second in the EFL Championship behind Leicester City.

It marks a return to the Premier League after a 22-year absence for a club that struggled financially following its relegation from the top-flight but which last month secured a £100 million+ investment for 40% of the club from US investor Bright Path Sports.

With the Championship promotion race going down to the final game of the season, Ipswich needed to win to secure promotion and prevent Leeds Utd taking the automatic promotion slot.

A 2-0 win over relegated Huddersfield Town with goals from Wes Burns and Omari Hutchinson scoring saw them pull comfortably clear of Leeds who lost to Southampton 2-1.

Those two clubs now enter into the play-offs for the third Premier League promotion spot with West Bromwich Albion and Norwich. All four clubs have significant Premier League histories which make Ipswich’s return from the lower leagues all the more remarkable.

During the course of the 46-game league season, Ipswich won 28 of their matches, drew 12 and lost only six.
