Job swap? Ten Hag for Tuchel? Man Utd and Ratcliffe still can’t find their man

May 8 – Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has been linked with a move to FC Bayern Munich this summer, despite a poor season with the Red Devils.

Current Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that he is parting ways with the club in the summer regardless of the Bavarians’ Champions League finish, meaning that a straight job swap could be on the cards between the two out-of-favour managers.

Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter and current England manager Gareth Southgate have also been linked with the Man Utd role, whose search has been spearheaded by lead investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

While the club has not confirmed Ten Hag’s departure officially, with an active recruitment process taking place and new staff sporting and technical directors incoming, the Dutchman’s crumbling position was worsened by a humiliating 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace on Monday.

The loss marked a new record for the Red Devils, who have endured the most losses of any Premier League campaign in their history at 13, with three games still to play.

Despite that, the club are still in the FA Cup Final, a repeat of last season’s final against Manchester City, albeit after scraping past Coventry City on penalties in the semi-finals. Coventry concluded their championship campaign on Saturday, finishing ninth in the English second tier.

The dysfunction in the Man Utd squad was perhaps highlighted by the performance of Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund, where he has been a key player since his loan move in January.

He was the subject of a high-profile fallout with Ten Hag in 2023, which saw the player ‘exiled’ from training sessions prompting a January move. Now he is preparing for a Champions League final, while Man Utd are currently looking at a season without European football.
