May 17 – Bayern Munich’s apparent u-turn to try and keep manager Thomas Tuchel at the club has been rebuffed after the two parties failed to reach an agreement.
Tuchel and Bayern announced in February he would be leaving at the end of the season but finding a successor has proved harder than anticipated.
Several German media outlets reported that the club’s sporting directors Max Eberl and Christoph Freund were in talks with Tuchel to reverse their joint decision to get rid of him.
Bayern’s players were apparently in favour of Tuchel staying on even though they will finish the season without a trophy for the first time since 2012.
But Tuchel has now made clear that he will be departing the role after little more than a year in charge.
“This is my last press conference as FC Bayern manager,” the former Chelsea head coach said ahead of his side’s final Bundesliga fixture against Hoffenheim.
“Our agreement from February still stands. We spoke about it again recently, but we did not reach an agreement. I won’t name the reasons.
“I’m a bit sad because I don’t like leaving teams and a staff. There are 60, 70 people here that you see every day. Also the stewards in the underground car park and the guys in the kitchen. There’s a bond that develops with time. You work closely together for hours every day. It’s always difficult.”
Tuchel, whose team were desperately unlucky to lose to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, could now be a target for Manchester United if they elect to part ways with Erik ten Hag. According to Bild newspaper, Tuchel’s team have already begun talks with United over a possible return to the Premier League.
