June 12 – Poland have been rocked by the news that their talisman and captain Robert Lewandowski will miss his side’s opening Euro 2024 game against the Netherlands on Sunday because of a thigh injury.
Lewandowski suffered the injury in Monday’s 2-1 friendly win over Turkey. The Barcelona forward was substituted after just 33 minutes on his 150th international appearance.
After Sunday Poland play Austria on June 21 and one of the tournament’s joint favourites France four days later.
“We are doing everything so that Robert can play in the second match against Austria,” team doctor Jacek Jaroszewski said in a statement.
The absence of the former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich striker adds to Poland’s injury worries.
Hellas Verona attacker Karol Swiderski sustained an ankle injury while celebrating the opening goal against Turkey. And Swiderski’s club team-mate, defender Pawel Dawidowicz, strained his quadriceps during the game.
Poland are already without Juventus striker Arkadiusz Milik who suffered a knee injury in the warmup victory against Ukraine on Friday and has been ruled out of the entire tournament. He would have played up front with Lewandowski
