June 24 – The Football Association of Wales has terminated head coach Rob Page’s contract following the country’s failure to qualify for Euro 2024.
Page had more than two years left on the contract he signed in September 2022 after guiding Wales to their first World Cup since 1958. He spent a total of four years in charge, initially being given the role on an interim basis in November 2020 after taking over from Ryan Giggs.
The FAW were reviewing his position since Wales limped out of the World Cup in Qatar and followed up with a set of unacceptable friendly results this month, which proved to be the final straw.
Wales drew 0-0 with Gibraltar, ranked 203rd in the world, and were then hammered 4-0 by Slovakia.
After the defeat at the hands of the Slovakians, who themselves impressed in their shock victory over Belgium last week, Page conceded the supporters had turned on him. “They want me out,” he said. “I completely understand.”
Wales, with some time before the next international window, are reportedly in no hurry to appoint a new coach but have started evaluating candidates. Their next game is a Nations League qualifier at home against Turkey in September, followed by an away match in Montenegro in the same competition.
The FAW’s chief executive, Noel Mooney, said: “On behalf of myself and the entire FAW, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Rob for his commitment and dedication to his roles for the national teams.
“Under Rob Page’s leadership, our Cymru men’s team has achieved significant milestones and victories which have created many incredible memories for our nation, most notably our first World Cup in 64 years.”
Thierry Henry is current favourite to replace Page as Wales boss, with the Frenchman eyeing yet another role in management – his fifth job in six years.
The ex-Arsenal star is currently at the helm of the France Olympic squad, featuring a glittering roster of young players.
Ex-Manchester United captain Roy Keane has also been linked to the vacancy, with FAW chief executive Mooney reportedly an admirer.
