August 29 – Football Australia have renewed their deal with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to sell broadcast rights in their own territory for all the AFC’s national team competitions from 2025 to 2028.
The renewal covers Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027the AFC Asian Qualifiers, the U23 Asian Cup 2026 and 2028, and the Women’s Asian Cup which Australia will host in 2026.
Football Australia first took over broadcast distribution rights for national team competitions in the 2021-2024 cycle with competitions being aired on Football Australia’s broadcast partner, Paramount Australia, including Network 10 and 10 Play, as well as Paramount+.
James Johnson (pictured), CEO of Football Australia, commented: “This landmark agreement with Network 10 and Paramount+ is a pivotal moment for Australian football. It brings unprecedented exposure to our national teams. Reacquiring the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) National Team competitions is a strategic move designed to maximise control over our content, enhance fan accessibility and unlock new revenue streams.”
It is unusual to cede distribution rights for major national team competitions to a national federation but the Australian broadcast market is reknowned for its parochial approach to buying sports content with fair prices rarely achieved by non-Australian sellers.
Datuk Seri Windsor John, the AFC General Secretary, said: “The AFC is pleased to extend our partnership with Football Australia, which ensures that our world-class competitions will continue to receive the best possible coverage across Australia as we aim to elevate viewership to new heights.
“It has indeed been heartening to see the great passion Australian fans demonstrate for the Asian game and I am confident that this renewed collaboration will reinforce the AFC’s ambitions to maintain football as the number one sport throughout the Continent.”
