October 25 – Haiti’s Melchie Dumornay and Panama’s Adalberto Carrasquilla have been named 2023/24 Concacaf Women’s and Men’s Players of the Year.
Olympique Lyon’s Melchie is the first ever Haitian to receive the award. She’s also the second ever Caribbean player to claim it behind last year’s winner Bunny Shaw, who was also a major contender for this season after a standout showing for Manchester City in the WSL.
In the Men’s category, Houston Dynamo’s Adalberto ‘Coco’ Carrasquilla became the first Panamanian player to collect the award ahead of the likes of USA’s Christian Pulisic (AC Milan) and Canada’s Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), and deservedly so. His performances in the 2023 Gold Cup helped Panama to a first-ever Gold Cup final, picking up the golden ball award in the process.
Concacaf President Victor Montagliani said: “On behalf of Concacaf, I congratulate Melchie as a very worthy winner of this award. We have seen her tremendous rise in our confederation with her incredible skill and determination. We saw it in our W Championship in Mexico two years ago for the Haiti national team and again in her outstanding performances in the FIFA Women’s World Cup last year. She is doing great things for her club in France and is an inspiration for people in Haiti and all of the Concacaf region.”
Speaking on Carrasquilla’s selection as Concacaf Men’s Player of the Year, Montagliani said: “Coco Carrasquilla was the best player in our 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. He inspired and led Panama to the Final with outstanding performances, and during his club season with the Houston Dynamo, he led them to the US Open Cup title and a berth into the Concacaf Champions Cup.
“He has driven Panama to the next level on the pitch, and I congratulate him as a very worthy Concacaf Player of the Year. On behalf of Concacaf, I congratulate Coco for a fantastic season.”
Nominees included six standout players per category, all recognised for their performance metrics with additional input from football analysts.
The awards are for outstanding performances over the season, with winners chosen via a voting process involving national coaches, players, regional media, and fans across the Concacaf network.
