Free travel, sustainability and respect are cornerstones of Women’s Euro 2025 ESG strategy

October 27 – UEFA and the Swiss organisers of the Women’s Euro 2025 championships have targeted the setting of new sustainability benchmarks as a key objective and to that end is offering free public transport to ticket holders on match days from any Swiss locality to the venue.

The ‘smart mobility’ plan comes as part of a wider Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Strategy unveiled for the tournament last week which has three main goals:

  • Reducing environmental impact wherever possible
  • Safeguarding and honouring the rights of individuals of all ages, backgrounds, nationalities and abilities
  • Embracing transparent, responsible and accountable practices throughout all operations

Unlike other tournaments that too frequently talk the sustainability talk, but then fudge the activations, the Women’s Euros has structured an extensive action plan around its three pillars – Environmental, Social, and Governance – with 11 areas of action, 27 topics, 47 targets, and 91 initiatives.

Michele Uva, UEFA social & environmental sustainability director said: “UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 embodies ambition, anticipation, and peak performance. Football is also more than about goals. We are committed to integrating ESG factors as a key contributing factor to the tournament’s success, putting into action our clear and transparent framework in partnership with all stakeholders, including the Swiss government and its various departments, the host city authorities and the Swiss Football Association.”

UEFA said: “Addressing discrimination is also central to the strategy, with a match observer scheme and rapid response measures in place to handle any incidents of abuse. The tournament strongly emphasises accessibility, ensuring inclusivity for fans with impairments and those from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.”

UEFA said that all venues will align with the strategy and that several campaigns will be launched throughout the tournament to involve fans in sustainability initiatives. An ESG report will be issued highlighting progress toward the set targets.
