Ipswich plan for stadium expansion with proposed land acquisition

November 1 – Premier League Ipswich Town have reached an “in-principle agreement” with Ipswich Borough Council to buy land behind their 29,673-capacity Portman Road stadium, with a portion of the Portman Road car park potentially earmarked for stadium development.

While final terms are still being negotiated, the move could enable the Premier League club to expand its historic Cobbold Stand, fulfilling what club CEO Mark Ashton describes as a medium to long-term ambition.

The expansion plans align with Ipswich Borough Council’s broader vision for redeveloping the surrounding area. Announced in March, the council’s masterplan proposes a revitalised Portman Road featuring a new aquatics centre, a multi-storey car park, a hotel, and designated areas for Ipswich Town’s growth.

A council spokesperson described it as an “exciting project and partnership” that underscores a shared commitment to elevating the local infrastructure and supporting the club’s ambitions.

Constructed in 1971, the Cobbold Stand is the oldest structure in Portman Road, providing seating for home supporters and up to 3,000 away fans. While recent upgrades have included the introduction of safe-standing areas and a new TV studio, the stand’s expansion could enhance fan experience and capacity at a stadium now hosting top-flight matches for the first time in 24 years.

An Ipswich Borough Council spokesperson said, “There is an in-principal agreement in place, though the specific terms are yet to be finalised. The comprehensive design work included in the Portman Road masterplan, features plans for an Aquatics Centre, a multi-storey car park, a hotel, and designated space for Ipswich Town Football Club’s development and expansion.

“The area in question covers approximately 3,500 square meters and is an integral part of the masterplan.”
