South Africa’s Danny Jordaan arrested in probe into theft of SAFA funds

November 13 – South African media report that long-time football official and South Africa FA (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan has been arrested in a fraud probe.

Jordan was arrested over allegations he used the organisation’s money for his own purposes. Hawks spokesperson Col Katlego Mogale said warrants for arrests were issued for Jordaan, Safa CEO Gronie Hluyo and businessman on Wednesday morning.

“The allegations are that between 2014 and 2018, the president of Safa used the organisation’s resources for his personal gain, including hiring a private security company for his personal protection and a public relations company, without authorisation from the Safa board.”

Jordaan had filed papers in the Johannesburg high court on Tuesday seeking to interdict his arrest and prosecution. Jordaan, as well as his reported co-accused SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo and businessman Trevor Neethling, will appear in court on Wednesday according to Reuters.

Jordaan has been an ever-green in South African football. He was an instrumental figure in bringing the 2010 World Cup to the country and the continent for the first time. In 2013, he was elected as president of SAFA and has served ever since. The South African is also a special advisor to CAF boss Patrice Motsepe.

Jordaan is not without controversy. In 2015, he admitted to a $10 million football payout by South Africa to Jack Warner, but denied that the money served as a bribe. He has also denied allegations of rape by former ANC MP and singer Jennifer Ferguson.
