Frank Lampard returns to management with Coventry City

November 28 – Coventry City have hired Frank Lampard as their new manager, the Championship club confirmed on Thursday.

Not everyone in life gets a second chance. Unless you’re Frank Lampard. Then you get four or five. The former England player and Chelsea manager signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Sky Blues to blow new life into his managerial career.

In a statement, the club’s executive Chairman Doug King said: “Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful. His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a club are striving to reach.”

Lampard enjoyed his managerial debut with Derby County before moving to Chelsea and Everton. At Stamford Bridge, the Englishman was dismissed after a series of disappointing results in January 2021. Thomas Tuchel, the current England manager, replaced him and won the Champions League, club football’s premier prize. In 2023, he returned to West London on an interim basis to win one game from eleven.

At Coventry, Joe Edwards will serve as assistant coach and Chris Jones as first-team coach. On Saturday, Lampard will debut at home against Cardiff United. After 17 matchdays, Coventry are 17th in the Championship table.

In a first interview with club media, Lampard said that talks with Coventry were clear and open from the start and relished the opportunity to manage again.

“I’ve got my idea how I want my teams to play and how I work, how I coach and that’s from the experiences I have had over the last five years, and I want to bring that here,” said Lampard.
