December 9 – Robbie Keane’s Irish heart was smiling this weekend as one of his 11 former clubs lifted the biggest title on offer in his former home of America. Keane, who spent five seasons in Los Angeles with the LA Galaxy winning three MLS Cups was on the sidelines as they won their sixth all-time title beating the New York Red Bulls 2-1 at Dignity Health Sports Park.
Keane completed his UEFA Pro coaching license in 2020 and has made no secret of his desire to become a head coach in Major League Soccer (MLS).
With multiple vacancies in the league opening up in Atlanta United, NYCFC, the Philadelphia Union, Toronto FC, and the Vancouver Whitecaps. Keane told MLS Season Pass on Apple TV: “I think it’s no secret I was fortunate enough last year to win the league and a cup, and did well in Europe, and took a bit of time off – and now I’m ready to come back.”
“There’s a few conversations going on in Europe and the MLS. Listen, I’ve been part of this league for five and a half years and, like I said, it’s only going to grow. I’d like to continue that, so let’s see. I’d like to ruffle some feathers, you know.”
Keane’s one and only head coaching role was with Maccabi Tel Aviv who he led to the Israeli Premier League title in his only season at the helm, also winning the Toto Cup and reaching the UEFA Conference League round of 16 during his brief tenure.
Prior to that the Irishman was first with the Ireland national team, before joining Jonathan Woodgate’s backroom staff at Middlesbrough and Sam Allardyce’s staff at Leeds United.
With his knowledge and experience of MLS, plus his huge network of international connections, Keane seems destined to come back to the USA, and square off against his former Galaxy teammate David Beckham.
