Out of line: English referee David Coote fired for misconduct

December 10 – Premier League referee David Coote has been sacked after his position was deemed “untenable” by English football’s referees body following an investigation into his conduct which found his actions to be in serious breach of his contract.

Coote had been suspended last month by The Professional Game Match Officials Limited after a video circulated on social media showing the official allegedly abusing Liverpool and its former manager Juergen Klopp

Coote is also the subject of UEFA disciplinary proceedings after a separate video emerged of him allegedly snorting a white powder during Euro 2024.

He is also being investigated by the English FA following allegations that he discussed with a fan betting on giving a yellow card before a match in England’s second-tier Championship.

His final Premier League game was Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa on November 9.

The PGMOL issued a statement saying Coote’s employment has been terminated with immediate effect following the conclusion of its investigation.

His “actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable,” the referees body said.

“Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare.”

Coote, who has been a Premier League referee since April 2018, has a right to appeal.
