February 20 – High-profile sports stars are increasingly targets for burglars and LAFC striker Oliver Giroud is the latest victim, as he lost approximately $500,000 worth of jewellery when his Los Angeles home was burgled earlier this month.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said they responded to a February 5 call from Giroud’s wife, Jennifer, about a smashed upstairs bedroom window at their West Los Angeles home.
Giroud and his family were not at the property when the burglary happened. The thieves made off with jewellery and 10 luxury watches.
Seth Burton, spokesman for LAFC, declined to comment about the incident on behalf of the French international, except to acknowledge that a burglary had taken place.
World Cup winner Giroud is currently in pre-season training with the reigning US Open Cup champions as they prepare to open the regular Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign at home to Minnesota United on Saturday.
Earlier this week, he started for LAFC in their 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids in the Concacaf Champions Cup first-leg tie.
This will be his second season in MLS after his high-profile transfer from Serie A club AC Milan. Since his move to Los Angeles, he has yet to find the back of the net, despite being a regular goal-scorer for his country, Arsenal, Chelsea and Milan.
