Atlético boost cyber threat battle with Google Cloud partnership

March 27 – Atlético de Madrid have secured a major tech ally in their fight against evolving cyber threats by announcing Google Cloud as their official cybersecurity partner.

The deal, which covers both the men’s and women’s teams, will see the global giant take charge of safeguarding the Spanish club from a range of online risks, including data breaches, ransomware attacks, mobile app vulnerabilities and phishing scams.

While the length and value of the agreement remain undisclosed, the partnership underscores Atlético’s commitment to digital security at a time when cyber threats in football are at an all-time high.

As clubs increasingly rely on digital platforms for fan engagement, ticketing and player data management, the need for robust cybersecurity has never been greater.

Atlético CIO René Abril said: “The safety and trust of our digital ecosystem is at the heart of everything we do. Cybersecurity plays a critical role in ensuring that every interaction with Atlético de Madrid — whether purchasing tickets, engaging online, or accessing club services — is secure and seamless.

“Working alongside Google Cloud has already given us valuable insights that we can use to strengthen our defences and knowledge about the kind of threats facing every football club around the world.”

Google Cloud’s reputation in AI-driven security solutions will now become instrumental in shielding the club’s digital ecosystem, ensuring that sensitive information – from player performance data to fan payment details – remains protected from evolving cyber threats.

Cristina Pitarch, Managing Director EMEA Google Cloud Security, said: “Sports clubs today operate in an increasingly digital world, making cybersecurity more important than ever.

“Atlético de Madrid’s proactive approach sets a strong example for the industry. We’re excited to support their journey by sharing our expertise, exploring new challenges and helping them build a secure foundation for the future.”
