UEFA probe Real Madrid players’ inflammatory behaviour after shoot-out UCL win over Atletico

March 28 – UEFA has launched an investigation into Real Madrid players Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Dani Ceballos, and Vinícius Júnior for alleged indecent conduct following their dramatic Champions League last-16 victory over Atletico Madrid.

The four players are accused of making inflammatory gestures towards Atletico supporters in the aftermath of Madrid’s penalty shootout triumph at the Metropolitano. UEFA has appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to assess the claims, which could lead to potential sanctions.

Tensions boiled over after Rüdiger’s winning spot-kick secured a 4-3 shootout victory, sending Madrid through to the quarter-finals.

As the visitors celebrated in front of Atletico’s home crowd, objects were hurled from the stands. Images circulating on social media appear to show Rüdiger allegedly making a throat-slitting gesture, while footage suggests Ceballos and Mbappé may have responded with obscene gestures as they left the pitch. Vinícius is also alleged to have directed a provocative action toward the home fans as he departed.

Under UEFA regulations, “offensive, insulting, or abusive language and/or actions” and “provocative, derisory, or inflammatory behaviour” are considered serious disciplinary breaches. If found guilty, the players could face suspensions or fines.

UEFA confirmed the investigation in a statement: “A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Daniel Ceballos Fernández and Vinícius Júnior) during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid CF on 12 March 2025.”

The heated clash ended 2-2 on aggregate before Madrid edged past their city rivals on penalties, further fuelled by controversy surrounding the decision to disallow Atleti striker Julian Alvarez’s penalty. With emotions running high, UEFA’s inquiry will determine whether celebrations crossed the line—and if disciplinary action will follow.
