Euro compliant: USL Super League announces June play-offs to close 2024/25 season

April 2 – The USL Super League, the first-division women’s soccer league competing against the National Women’s Soccer League, has announced that its championship match will be played on June 14, 2025.

The league will play the European calendar of August to May/June as opposed to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) which runs from March to November, and believes it has the edge in the transfer market and eyeballs as the league isn’t up against the monster of American TV, the National Football League (NFL).

The league, which began play just last year, unveiled its play-off format on Tuesday.

Four semi-finalists will play on the weekend of June 7. The No. 1 seed will face the No. 4 seed while the second and third-seeded teams will face off, with the higher seed hosting each single-elimination game.

“We are thrilled to unveil the dates for our inaugural playoffs,” Amanda Vandervort, the USL Super League’s president said in a statement.

“This marks an exciting new chapter for the USL Super League, as we bring together the top teams in the league to compete for the first-ever final. We can’t wait for the playoffs in June and to see who will rise to the occasion and become the league’s inaugural champions.”

The USL Super League also announced on Tuesday that it will hand out year-end awards with an American flavour. In addition to a Golden Boot winner for the top goal-scorer, a Golden Glove will be awarded to the goalkeeper with the lowest goals-against average (among those who have played at least 50% of the club’s regular-season minutes) while the player with the most assists will also receive the ‘Golden Playmaker’.

Currently, the top four clubs, Carolina Ascent FC, Brooklyn FC, Fort Lauderdale United, and Dallas Trinty FC are separated by only four points as the jockeying for a prime playoff position heats up.
