Big is beautiful. Infantino wants every FA chief on a committee as FIFA balloons in size

April 4 – FIFA president Gianni Infantino has suggested expanding his organisation’s committees to include every single FA president.

In Belgrade, at the UEFA Congress, the annual gathering of European football leaders, the football supremo stole the show, revealing the destiny of the 2031 and 2035 Women’s World Cups.

At the same time, in his bid to “unite the world,” Infantino said: “Every president of every association in the world, including, of course, Europe, will be a member of a FIFA committee so that we can really bring everyone under one roof to bring football to new heights.”

FIFA has 211 members associations and adding such a number of officials to the governing body’s committees would bloat its structures. Last year, at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok, Infantino announced that a slew of new committees would be added. The number of standing committees would be increased from seven to 35.

FIFA said at the time that the expansion was to “reflect the increasing breadth and depth of FIFA’s activities in recent years, allowing for more member associations to be directly involved in the democratic decision-making processes.”

It was a remarkable U-turn after governance reforms reduced the number of committees at FIFA.

In the aftermath of FIFAgate, a panel chaired by the late François Carrard recommended terminating most of FIFA’s 26 committees. Infantino was a part of the panel and in Carrard’s autobiography is praised for his contribution to the reform process.
