Serie A’s Como to expand Sinigaglia next season ahead of a full redevelopment starting in 2026

April 14 – FC Como are continuing redevelopment work at the historic Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, with the latest phase set to increase capacity to about 12,000 in time for the start of the next season in Serie A.

The expansion follows a summer of upgrades in 2023 that saw capacity rise from 7,498 to over 10,500 ahead of the club’s long-awaited return to Italy’s top flight. Como secured promotion from Serie B in the 2023-24 campaign, ending a 21-year absence from Serie A.

The next stage of redevelopment will add approximately 1,200 seats, with the right section of the away end also being reopened, local media outlet Il Giorno has reported. Currently 12 points above the relegation zone, Cesc Fabregas’ side is expected to stay up – a crucial factor in bankrolling the stadium development.

Situated on the shores of Lake Como, the Sinigaglia offers one of Italian football’s most picturesque backdrops, but has required major structural and safety improvements to meet Serie A standards. Como played their first three matches of the current season away from home due to delays, only returning to Sinigaglia in mid-September.

Longer-term plans are also in motion. In February, the club – in collaboration with the Municipality of Como and global architecture firm Populous — unveiled initial concepts for a full-scale redevelopment of the stadium. The proposed design would modernise the venue while maintaining its unique lakeside setting and historic identity.

The redevelopment process is expected to move through design and approval phases by May 2026, followed by a two-stage construction plan. The first phase is targeted for completion in October 2027, with the full project to be finished by August 2028. The end goal is a fully refurbished, Serie A-ready stadium with a capacity of between 15,000 and 20,000.

The club’s ambitious stadium project is being bankrolled in part by owners Robert and Michael Hartono, the Indonesian billionaire brothers behind Como’s recent resurgence.
