Old school River Plate-Boca derby transformed into a high tech showpiece at Mâs Monumental

Aril 24 – Argentina’s Superclásico between River Plate and Boca Juniors this weekend isn’t just another edition of South America’s most intense club rivalry – it’s a window into the future of football on the continent in a stadium that has embraced technology to transform its operations.

River Plate’s Mâs Monumental, the largest stadium in the region, has become a symbol of how innovation and strategic modernisation are reshaping the footballing experience.
With a history of crowd disturbances at their biggest matches, River Plate have taken steps to tackle with the problem with the introduction of facial recognition technology for stadium entry. This allows more than 85,000 fans to enter the Mâs Monumental quickly, securely, and efficiently.

Embracing digital technology’s new frontier, River Plate has also built an advanced membership platform – River ID – with more than 350,000 active members using the digital tool to manage their affiliation, reserve seats, and access club content.

From 2019 to 2024, the stadium’s capacity has increased from 65,860 to 85,018 seats — the highest in South America. The digital platform enabled Sunday’s Superclásico to sell out in just two hours.

River has now hosted more than 80 consecutive sell-out matches at home.
The digital epiphany has also encouraged technological upgrades throughout the stadium which now has a 360° LED screen that runs around the entire mid-tier of the stadium. Comprising 610 modules, it spans 488 meters in length and delivers ultra-high resolution. Fans are surrounded by live stats, player profiles, and immersive match-day content.

The action on the pitch will be familiar and the passion and commitment will be as intense as ever on the field and in the stands. That raw emotion has fuelled a technology makeover that is leading the continent as it lobbies for further expansion of the 2030 World Cup to enable more games in the centenary edition of the finals in venues that match the big occasions.
