Leeds United plan stadium redevelopment following EPL return

April 29 – Leeds United have revealed a comprehensive plan for redeveloping their iconic Elland Road stadium following their return to the English Premier League. The ambitious project aims to significantly increase capacity while revitalising the surrounding area.

The club recently received crucial approval from Leeds City Council’s Executive Board, a critical step given the considerable authority local councils exercise over development projects in England.

The plans will next be presented at the pre-application Plans Panel on May 8, where further details of the area’s regeneration will be discussed.

Elland Road, which currently accommodates 37,645 spectators, consistently sells out for home matches, with demand far outstripping supply. The club report an extraordinary 26,000 fans are currently on the season ticket waiting list, underscoring the need for expansion.

The proposed redevelopment would increase capacity to between 53,000 and 56,500 seats, with the West and North Stands undergoing the most substantial transformations, with minor alterations planned for the South Stand.

The stadium, affectionately known as “The Old Peacock Ground” in its early days, has a rich history dating back to 1897 when it became Leeds United’s home. Throughout its 128-year history, Elland Road has witnessed numerous transformations, including major renovations in the 1970s during the club’s golden era under Don Revie.

If approved, the redevelopment project promises substantial commercial benefits for the club, including increased matchday revenues through additional ticket sales and premium hospitality packages. The modernised facility would also enhance appeal to sponsors and corporate partners, ultimately strengthening Leeds United’s long-term financial sustainability.

The club have emphasised the importance of stakeholder engagement throughout the process. Officials are actively seeking input from fans and local community members to ensure the redevelopment serves both the club’s ambitions and the needs of the surrounding area. This collaborative approach aims to create a stadium that honours Elland Road’s storied history while positioning it for a successful future.

The expanded capacity would place Elland Road among the largest club stadiums in England, reflecting Leeds United’s status as one of the country’s most historically significant and well-supported clubs.
