MLS faces discrimination issue following Minnesota-Vancouver clash

April 29 – A Major League Soccer (MLS) match between Minnesota United and the Vancouver Whitecaps has become the centre of controversy following an alleged violation of the league’s Non-Discrimination Policy.

In the 95th minute of the contest, the broadcast feed captured a heated verbal exchange between Minnesota’s Joseph Rosales and Vancouver’s Emmanuel Sabbi. Vancouver midfielder Sebastian Berhalter quickly joined the confrontation, visibly gesturing at Rosales.

Referee Drew Fischer appeared to implement MLS’s protocol for discrimination violations, gathering both team managers and captains for discussion as tensions escalated.

According to the Minnesota Star-Tribune, the situation deteriorated further after the final whistle, with Rosales engaging in ‘handbags’ reportedly shoving an unnamed player in the tunnel as the teams exited the pitch.

Minnesota United promptly issued a statement addressing the incident: “Minnesota United are aware of an on-field incident involving one of our players and an allegation of a violation of the League’s Non-Discrimination policy.

“Harassment or discriminatory behaviour have no place in our sport, and we condemn all forms of harassment or discrimination. We are in close communication with Major League Soccer and will refrain from making any further comments as the League reviews the matter.”

The incident comes as MLS works to enforce its new Anti-Discrimination Policy implemented in 2024, which the league describes as “the first of its kind in American professional sports, in that it is centered on restorative practices, prioritising education, prevention, training and cultural awareness.”

The league’s investigation into this latest incident will likely test the effectiveness of these new protocols as MLS continues its efforts to create an inclusive environment across the competition.
