December 20 – Saudi Arabia will compete at the 16-team Concacaf Gold Cup next summer, to be played predominantly on the West coast of the USA.

To date eight Concacaf teams have already qualified through the Concacaf Nations League, with seven more to be confirmed following the Gold Cup preliminary round play-offs in March 2025.

December 20 – The European Leagues organisation has insisted it was not consulted by the promoters of the proposed European Super League regarding the relaunch of the breakaway concept as the Unify League.

The original European Super League (ESL), backed by 12 of the continent’s biggest clubs, evaporated almost overnight after it was controversially launched in 2021

Under the proposed revamp announced this week, Sports development company A22 said the new 96-club format across four leagues would be merit-based and more competitive than UEFA’s current club competitions.

December 20 -A senior Swiss lawyer who for nine years has sat on various Swedish FA committees and is currently chair of its appeals committee, has resigned from the federation over its failure to protest the award of the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia.

Kerstin Elserth told Fotsbalkanallen that she is leaving the Swedish FA (SvFF) die to its “spineless” acceptance of the FIFA 2034 World Cup bid process and its unquestioned acceptance of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and its engagement in “advanced sportswashing”.

December 20 – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has drawn the groups for the 16-team AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup to be played in Thailand in March next year.

The tournament will be played at Jomtien Beach in Pattaya from March 20 to 30, 2025. The top three teams will qualify for the Beach Soccer World Cup in the Seychelles, the first time it has been hosted in Africa, in May 2025.

December 20 – Romanian businessman Dan Șucu has taken control of the storied Italian club Genoa, ending months of uncertainty under the ownership of 777 Partners.

On Wednesday, Genoa, Italy’s oldest club, announced that the Romanian had acquired a majority stake following a capital increase in the club of €40 million for a 77% share. Three years ago, Genoa was sold to 777 Partners, bringing to an end the ownership of Enrico Preziosi.

December 20 – The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) and the Romanian Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) launched a financial education manual dedicated to football players aged 10-16, to support them in managing their personal finances and making informed financial decisions both during and after their sports career.

The publication is part of a more comprehensive collaboration protocol, signed by ASF and FRF in May, with the common objective of facilitating access to financial education for as many football players as possible.

December 19 – After much too-ing and fro-ing and having pulled out of an original deal last summer, The Friedkin Group (TFG) has finally completed its majority takeover of Everton, ending the turbulent tenure of Farhad Moshiri and sparking fresh hope for fans of one the Premier League’s longest standing clubs.

The Texas-based group led by Dan Friedkin has bought former owner Moshiri’s 94.1% stake and have promised to bring financial stability to the club which for years has been in the shadow of near-neighbours Liverpool on the field.
